History
With over 100 years of winemaking experience to draw on, McGuigan Wines was founded to celebrate ‘The Love of Wine'. A driving force in the Hunter Valley, its founder's ensured winemaking was a lifestyle and this uncompromising dedication to the craft has brought the world some of the finest Australian wines. This passion has been reflected in McGuigan Wines being crowned International Winemaker of the Year a world record four times at the prestigious International Winemaker & Spirits Competition (IWSC).
Regional Information
The climate is hot with high evaporation rates and generally low rainfall, making irrigation essential. The climate is also continental, resulting in long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights. Modern viticultural and winemaking techniques mean that the climate can be seen as one of the region's strengths. Long sunshine hours ensure fruit ripens fully and low relative humidity results in little incidence of disease.

Vinification Details
The fruit was crushed and de-stemmed to varying sizes & styles of red fermenters where the fruit was fermented on oak at cooler temperatures of 18-22oC for 5-7 days. Fermenting at cooler temperatures allows the fruit flavours to be nurtured and enables retention of varietal characteristics. Post fermentation the majority of the wine is matured in stainless steel tanks with a percentage of the wine transferred onto French & American Oak.

One a good wine but not anymore
This used to be good but now seems to be very watery

Really not nice
This used to be a drinkable inexpensive wine but the last few bottles we have had had been quite unpleasant. Not sure what has changed, but quality control at the winemaker's end could use some work.

very tasty
Reminded me why I used to like Australian wines a lot. very pleasant
Was this helpful?
watery and unpleasant
Not even light bodied its as thought its been watered down and mixed with vimto. Has an odd sweetness. Tastes cheap.

Yuck
Cheap for a reason. Couldn't finish a glass - got immediately promoted to cooking wine.
Was this helpful?
watered down
Previously a reasonable budget wine, since tax changes made based on abv, they have seemingly added water to get down to 11%. Its now simply vile, tasteless and with no discernible body. Avoid.
