If You Care Compostable Trash Bags are made from potato starch from non-GMO starch potatoes blended with a certified, fully compostable polymer. No plasticizers are added.. Starch is a mixture of a linear (amylose) and a branched (amylopectin) polymer of glucose. Potato starch has a higher percentage of amylopectin than either corn or wheat starch. Amylopectin gives starch its structural integrity, so it helps make If You Care Compostable Trash Bags stronger than bags made from corn starch. The potato starch used to make If You Care Compostable Trash Bags comes from starch potatoes, which are not grown as a food source, but only for starch production. These potatoes are too high in starch to be good for food. Therefore, there is no diversion from food supplies. In addition, to produce the same amount of starch from these potatoes as from corn requires 40% less land. Other compostable bags are made from corn which requires more water, but potatoes require no irrigation, and need only normal rainfall. Approximately 80 million tons of waste (U.S. EPA figures) which goes to landfill annually is material which under the right conditions, can be turned into compost, including food scraps, yard trimmings and non-recyclable paper. In a landfill environment, this trapped organic material (leaves, grass etc.) releases methane gas – a greenhouse gas – contributing to global warming. Diverting food scraps and yard trimmings from landfill to compost facilities – either municipal or commercial in areas where available – contributes significantly to preserving our planet and natural resources.

faulty
this was £10 and we cannot separate the bags which is rather annoying as can't use them.
Thumbs up for If You Care
Food waste is removed separately by our Local Authority every week and we have found these potato starch based bags with no plastizer to be strong (despite on occasions filling them with some quite heavy food waste) with no occurrence of splitting nor premature decomposition. A box of 30 bags generally lasts our family of four adults about three months. fly/maggot blight seemed to reduce since using them for the last year and this may be because the size of the bags ( a generous 11 litres) permit a good airtight knot to seal them before putting them into the Council Waste Food Mini Bins. We (previously used 7litre compositble bags and paper compostible bags- never again!) Will definitely be continuing with IYC.
Quality and ethical product
These bags work just as well as other standard brands. They are compostable so if kept for long with leaking food they could break eventually (like after days and days of kept wet), nothing different from other brands. They are strong, really they rarely break with me, and the brand is much more ethical and eco friendly that cheaper ones. Been using for years, I recommend!
not acceptable at all councils
As others have found, these start degrading at once and collapse quickly. The small print on the box states that not acceptable by all councils and South Cambs District Council refuses to take them - which meant going through the bin and emptying out the contents and putting the bags (now partly shredded) in the recycling bin - not a task to be repeated!!
Very strong if changed after 2-3 days
In contrast to other reviewers I've actually found these stronger than other makes. My household is mainly vegetarian and generates a lot of scraps so I do change them every 2-3 days. If you expect any compostable bag to last a week it probably won't, and the wetter the food waste the quicker the decomposition of the bag.
Decomposes too quickly
On the first two occasions, when lifting the week-old bag out of the bin, the bottom opened spilling the contents. A revolting clean-up job. Since then, I’ve learnt to double-bag, effectively doubling the price of the product.
