Tasting Notes
The fruit-driven Pinotage, which offers a good, juicy glass of wine, as handled very gently in the cellar to preserve its generous aromas of black cherries, cloze and raspberry jam. A smooth and juicy palate, redolent with ripe mulberries, and glimmers of tobacco and spice from gentle oaking, is followed by an appealingly savoury finish.
History
The wine estate was built in 1920 and by 1947 the wine cellar was completed and a group of local farmers starting making wines under the Franschhoek Cellar name. In 2008, a return to private ownership saw Franschhoek Cellar move back to its roots in celebrating its heritage and focusing on creating varietal wines that reflect our unique South African terroir. Franschhoek is one of the truly great wine & food destinations in South Africa. |

Enjoying with our BBQ!
Love South African red and this one works well with steak on the BBQ. Great vintage and depth of flavour.
Lovely wine!
vintage 2019 rating 4.1 on vivino - can't be wrong!
Bad batch?
Possibly a corked batch, we tried it last night and it smelled like a damp dog, and tasted worse! (Not that I have ever actually tasted a damp dog...) It was undrinkable. Will not be ordering again. JAD
The worst wine I have tried sober
This is disgusting. It can't be corked, because it is a screwtop. But 3 sips in, and I am throwing the whole bottle away. Absolutely gross.
Bad bottle ?
Easily my worst bottle of wine of the past 10 years. Musty like a damp cellar. If this is what the wine-maker intended, then the best I can say is the style is seriously retro/eccentric. The label mentions mulberry flavours well I dont eat those either and I dont know anyone who does. Perhaps this was simply a bottle gone bad.
A Great Vintage
Weve just tried the 2019 vintage we had delivered. It was obviously a good vintage as this has a strong and discernible pinotage flavour. If you like pinotage you wont be disappointed with the 2019 bottle
