History
Fairview is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Paarl, which is more
sheltered from the moderating maritime influence than nearby Stellenbosch. Vines were planted here as early as 1699. The property was bought by the grandfather of current owner Charles Back in 1937. Fairview has a reputation for consistent quality across a range of innovative styles, using both classic and unusual varieties, and leads the field in South Africa in matching varieties to specific sites. The Fairview estate now has a total of 680 hectares of vineyard over four appellations: Paarl, Swartland, Darling and Stellenbosch. This vineyard ownership in so many different regions allows Charles to produce a wide range of wines, from grapes grown in optimal conditions. In 2014, Charles received a lifetime achievement award from the International Wine Challenge.
Regional Information
Shiraz is sourced from a special selection of vineyards, predominantly at Fairview on the south-western slopes of Paarl Mountain on decomposed granite soils. Complementary components of the blend are from dryland vineyards in Agter-Paarl on deep Malmesbury shale soils and from dryland vineyards in Swartland and from cooler Atlantic vineyards in Darling.

Vinification Details
Grapes were destalked and lightly crushed before fermentation. Grapes were fermented on the skins for 10 days and then pressed. Malolactic fermentation was completed in oak barrels with a small portion in tank. The wine was racked and sent to barrel for 12 months. The wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak, with approximately 30% new wood being used. The components were then specially selected, blended and bottled.

Enjoyable red

I’m reviewing this product because I got a free sample from Ocado. As other reviewers have said this is a wine that is probably better opened in a couple of years. Having said that we did finish the bottle and would buy again if it weren't so expensive.

Review wine they said!

Happy to review but wouldn’t buy at this price £16. We both enjoyed it.

Full Bodied Red

Very nice full bodied Shiraz. More expensive than my usual wines, but you can taste the difference

Review product

I received this from Ocado to review. It was a nice bottle that was definitely drinkable, but was quite harsh at first and as other reviewers mentioned, it states it should be stored for a few years first

I think this needs to be tried in a few years

I’m reviewing this product because I got a free sample from Ocado. In the description it says that this wine ‘will mature well over the next 5-8 years’, but under usage, in the storage notes, it says ‘To enjoy this wine at its best, drink within 3 years of purchase’. I can’t do both. Can Ocado please clarify. Thank you. That said, I have a feeling that this wine would do better stored for 5-8 years. Once opened, I found it quite harsh and acidic. Left to breathe, it mellowed a little, but still too harsh for me and left my mouth very dry. I know that sometimes red wine tastes better when slightly chilled (room temp in ‘the olden days’ isn’t the same as room temp now) and so I put it in the fridge and tried it a day later. A day open and slightly chilled and it definitely improved. I have given four stars, even though this currently isn’t to my taste, as I have a feeling that this really should be enjoyed a few years down the line. I am not a wine expert, but grew up with a wine making Grandpa known for his award winning wines and have tasted how much some wines can improve after a few years. I think this might be one of them.

Excellent Wine

This bottle was sent to me by Ocado to review. This South African Fairview 2017 Shiraz can only be described as excellent. The wine was an opaque, ruby-purple in hue, and offered concentrated jammy aromas and flavours of blueberry and blackberry together with a slight peppery spice overtones. The Alcohol levels were slightly higher than normal at 14%. Overall an excellent and well recommend wine.
