Product information

Zip invented the kerosene firelighter back in 1936 and today, our latest high performance products are designed to make lighting a fire easier than ever.

Our firelighters are more powerful than other firelighters. They light easily first time, every time and burn longer, using fewer cubes meaning better value.

Formulated to light even the most difficult fuels for indoor and outdoor fires. There really is no other firelighter like Zip.

there are better ones out there

I found these went out within a couple of minutes. I had to leave the stove door open to get them to work. They also do smell strongly fumey.

work ok but poor value

same size box just that the've made the firelighters smaller so used to be 15 and now 20 - bit of a con! Also they're not properly cut so they do not break off - very smelly

Rather stinky

These work just as well as the Zip Odourless firelighter, but they have a very strong kerosene / petrol smell. I found that the kerosene smell got on my hands and wafted around the room - I much prefer the odourless fire lighters.

Excellent results

We were novices to real fires, but after trying most firelighters, including most of the Zip range, and developing our fire-building skills a little, we've concluded you really don't need more than these. We use a few coals and two of these, on top of a mix of newspaper tied in knots and wood for a kindling base. After lighting them we add a few more coals around and on the flame but leave a few gaps to be sure not to smother the flames. Finally we perch a log on top to keep the heat concentrated. Then we leave it well alone! One of the biggest mistakes we made initially was too much prodding and poking, which often meant the heat was unable to build up enough for the coals to take. Ultimately, a poorly made and tended fire will die even if you used the priciest firelighters. Make a good one and learn how to tend it, and these will work every time.
