We only eat this mackerel
We either heat all the contents on the hob and eat it with bread as a side or turn it into a quick Sicilian pasta sauce by using its olive oil first to soften the onions. We buy nothing else now and eat it weekly. Doesnt smell /taste fishy, and our kids like eating it as a pasta sauce. Mediterranean is our favourite flavour, but theyre all good.
store cupboard favourite
Im a huge fan of this product, is by far the best tinned mackerel Ive tried. I drain some of the excess oil off and add some premium tomato ketchup. Excellent on toasted sourdough.
Not for me
I'm used to a more expensive brand on Ocado with chili oil and much prefer that. This one wasn't nice to eat. Flavour was ok, but fish chewy
Does an image have sales pitch?
Be assured the Mackerel tastes good. So why leave a longer review, I consider myself to be a fairly careful shopper but this product caught me out. With tinned food, when coming to a discussion to buy I have always initially considered the weight of the food as that is usually the easiest variable to solve, then considerations of quality are explored and finally value for money which is after all the first to items on my agenda combined with affordability. So what is my gripe with this tinned Mackerel product, well this type of product is available elsewhere as we all know but this product has an additional layer of packaging, ( don’t ask why), and that packaging fouled up my first part of my appraisal for as depicted in Ocado’s advert it states weight 115g, surely that would the weight of the food that I would eat, like everybody else one presumes few of us will eat the tin or outer packaging and how many drink the fluid from any such tin, maybe smallish quantities of sugar-water from tinned fruit but oil from a tin of fish not so much, I light the fire with it. Anyway to calculate the weight of the oil when costing the price per 100g as is done here is in my opinion misleading for to this customer I consider the oil to be part of the packaging. I feel robbed, after tasting the product can verify is is up to par, is it better than similar products sold in other stores for nearly half the price, not really. None of this would have occurred if the packaging shown in the Advert was the same as the sort delivered for that clearly states net weight 80g. I for one would not have purchased.
Great tasting fish and nice balance of flavour
Really enjoyed these, there is a lot of oil in the can which might be a problem. The flavour is more about the fish but the Mediterranean herbs are great just in the background. No idea why John West felt they needed a new brand for this flavour though
