fantastic wok, light and sturdy
Got this to replace my older cheaper M&S wok (black one with a lid) turns out that lid fits on this wok, so thats a nice bonus for me as this doesnt come with a lid although I will admit, I very rarely used it anyways. This is a great wok as its much lighter then my old one but somehow feels more sturdy. Its exactly the same size as my old wok and even better, I got this on sale from Ocado for £33, which M&S store refused to price match so ordered from Ocado instead.
Pandemic purchase Sept 2020
Had plenty of time to kill. Spent a majority of it in the kitchen cooking for family. Tried to be healthier. We normally ate out 4/7 of the week but Boris's lockdown ended that. Not that being Southeast Asian makes much of a difference but I've seen and used a number of woks during my 48ish years. Eating is my profession, I mean passion. REVIEW: This sturdy, slightly heavy wok is a pleasure to cook with and wash. I have tendonitis on both elbows so for me this isn't difficult to carry. We have made loads of steamed fish, stir-frys, fried rice, noodle dishes and spring rolls. Once cooled down from cooking, I use a paper towel to wipe out the oil and food residue. Then washing it is a breeze. I've never had to use vigorous scrubbing. The very few times it had burnt bits after cooking, I just added 500ml of water and gently boiled it in the wok. Let it cool and remnants easily came off. The depth is great for deep frying. To steam 2 Seabass fillets I use a small wire streamer rack to hold a plate/bowl over water. We don't use a microwave so we steam food that requires reheating. I bought a separate 30cm lid 'Le Creuset' online and it fit perfectly. The long handle never gets too hot though it is warm to touch. The other rectangular handle is convenient when bringing it to the table or for gripping while washing. The bottom has remained sturdy since purchase. Despite using it nearly everyday it only has a few scratches, that is if you look very close up to it. My only complaint is the discolouration of the non-stick material. A dark brown ring around the inside above the base has emerged. Had I known better at the time I would not have put the heat on my gas stove at 'High Throttle' when I would start cooking. I have learnt from other sources, you must let the heat gradually increase for proper usage. Hindsight! Doesn't sound right to me, it's a pan, it should be 'heated' but I'll do this from now on. The instructions didn't mention or make this clear as a warning. The handle has a hole on the end in case you like to hang your pots to save space. Price wise, £45 sounds steep but it's quality assures you it is worth it. Life time guarantees mean nothing because seriously, who will actually remember that piece of information in 5 years time. Dishwasher safe, I haven't and wouldn't put it in one. My gorgeous last wok was ruined by using the dishwasher. The cleaning chemicals and the interior rack dividers can easily scratch the non-stick coating. It's so easy to wash so I wouldn't bother. In summary it was a fab purchase, despite the collective weight gain. I'd give this as a gift to a friend and future son/daughter in law. Inspire them to cook. Happy Tummy, Happy Mummy
