excellent
best pork for roasting I have bought from Ocado
Utterly delicious. Marvelous Easter treat
This was a really great Easter treat. The pork was succulent and utterly delicious. The crackling was crispy and crunchy and salty. Just as you'd expect. However, I am well used to cooking pork and the instructions are not quite right. You should dry it, salt generously for at least 30 minutes AND you should crank the oven right up at the end for another 20-30 minutes. So hot oven for 30 mins, cook low for 2 hours then *another* 20-30 minutes to get the crackling done. It is essential to let the meat rest for at least 20 minutes covered loosely with tin foil. I had bought this and froze it so it was on hand for Easter lunch. It takes 24-36 hours to defrost in the fridge. I defrosted it for 36 hours.
Disappointing
We absolutely adore roast pork, but roasting this, and being totally underwhelmed by what was served up, reminded me why I normally buy my meat from a trusty local butcher. However, I had high hopes as the joint went into the oven as it looked decent enough, (and was roasted as per instructions). But when it was served it was such a disappointment. It was flavourless and the middle part was dry and tough. Outer layer was marginally better, but the crackling was dire. I separated it from the meat once the joint was cooked, and put it back in the oven to crisp up, which worked. (In the meantime the two pieces of pork had fallen apart; I guess the crackling had been holding it all together.) But I had my doubts whether this crackling had ever a part of the same piece of meat. - it had none of the usual characteristics, savoury, satisfying flavour, crunchy texture etc of crackling. Very odd.
Not for me
I personally didnt like the taste, a bit overpowering. The crackling wasnt great either, I bought this on a flash sale, wouldnt buy again, Id go for the pork belly joint, thats much nicer.
Sensational
I have followed the recipe and got the perfect crackling. It was amazing. Fantastic taste. Top quality. I am happy that I bought it on flash sale. I will wait to buy it on sale again.
Exponential price rise
The last time I bought this about a year ago it was £25, normal price, not on offer. It was very nice, but will absolutely not buy this again while it remains £35! I know prices have risen but a nearly 33% increase is far too much!
