Surprisingly the more calories the better!
Garden birds use lots of energy in their daily activities. Foods rich in fats and oils will contain high calorie levels and it is these calories that provide them with the energy they need to breed, survive and thrive throughout the year.
So when it comes to bird food, the higher the calories, the better for your birds!

a definite hit!
I put this up and within a matter of hours the birds had the birds had started to feed from it. In particular the tits absolutely love it. Its lovely to see the parents chiselling off a bit and then flying to feed it to their young. They do this repeatedly. I actually cut away a bit of the food near the base to put in a feeder and this has actually given the birds something to perch on, so some perch on the plastic on the bottom, and some perch on top of the cake itself and feed directly from it. I will definitely be buying this again!
I wanted to encourage a variety of birds into the garden and wowzers it has worked! Like other reviewers, this is so popular it goes quickly - like a fast food takeaway for nature!
Our birds think they are delicious, put out 2, the next day they were gone. It will cost us a fortune, but it is good to see so many birds enjoying their food.
Birds love this, but clever squirrels just bite through the plastic, any ideas?
I've seen black caps and coal tits in the garden for the first time since hanging this, and great tits and blue tits also love it
loved by all the birds in the garden
Blackbirds, robins, blue tits (including fluffy baby ones) and others all love this food, which disappears quickly. Some cling to the food and others perch on a nearby branch.
