Good winter food source for wild garden birds

Our birds get live meal worms, but these are a good food source in the winter if we run out, so always keep a packet. The birds don't turn their nose up after live, they still eat them. I would soak these before feeding these to young fledglings to make them softer.

Pleasure to watch birds

Not cheap but nice to see wagtail, robin and dunnock picking mealworms together while tits eat peanuts and sunflower kernels that makes me happy and worth investigating for these wonderful birds.

Static in the packet makes them look alive!!

To Genie who posted below its just static electricity and gravity that makes them look like they are on the move. Great for playing a prank on someone - just pull up a sort of tent in the centre of the packet and give it a bit of a jiggle. Soon there will be a good handful looking like they are rearing up. Some might even fly through the air in the packet! Enjoy!!! Birds like them a lot on e Ive finished playing ) One star off as they often look pretty tatty.

Do not feed hedgehogs with mealworms

Please do not give mealworms to hedgehogs - they cause a panful bone disease in hedgehogs I have only just found this out. Give them to the birds instead.

Birds love them

I soak them in hot water before putting them out as I had heard that when dry they weren't good for the chicks.. They are a favourite of sparrows, blue tits, robins and less appreciated by me ,of pigeons and magpies. Our resident Hedgehog also likes them but again they are not good for them in large quantities.
