Barfoots farm over 900 acres of asparagus in the UK, the majority of which is grown on the beautiful South Downs, providing south facing warmth and free draining soil that asparagus love. Our British asparagus comes into season around the April 23rd, lasting roughly for 8 weeks until the Summer Solstice on 21st June.
The colder UK climate results in a slower growth rate, which creates a greater build up of anthocyanin…giving British Asparagus a distinct purple hue and stronger taste profile. The anthocyanin pigment belongs to a class of compounds called flavonoids that are thought to help promote good health through their antioxidant effects.
Outside of the UK season and when our UK crop requires supplementing, Barfoots Peru provides the majority supply of our asparagus, transported by sea to minimise carbon. Our investment in farming in Peru has made us the largest importer of Asparagus into the UK, we have also invested in restoration projects promoting biodiversity and soil fertility in the area.
Whether you steam, grill, roast or include in your favourite dish, the spears cook quickly with minimum prep.

Barfoot Farms:
Farming vegetables since 1976, our philosophy has not changed since our first crop: Look after the land like you are going to farm forever.
We’ve pioneered sustainable farming methods for decades, and have been carbon neutral within our UK manufacturing operation since 2010. Our founder, Peter Barfoot, has been awarded a CBE for services to sustainable farming.
We invest in the quality of the soil and the biodiversity balance to produce the most sustainable, healthy and tasty crops. We only farm crops in the UK that are suited to the local soil and weather conditions, using a combination of modern and traditional farming techniques.
Our unique climate on the South Coast of England provides us with warmer soils and higher light levels that’s ideal for growing exceptional speciality vegetables.
Outside of the UK growing season we follow the sun, operating farms and working with growers around the world. We transport by sea, road and rail to minimise our carbon footprint.

Woody, thick stalks
This was a waste of money despite having bought this asparagus on offer. The stalks were very thick and woody and so there were less stalks that expected from the advertised weight. I also have to discard so much of the woody stalks before cooking that what was left wasn't worth even the offer price.
Misleading, not British even in peak season
Tough, woody asparagus. Very misleading listing, manufactured in UK at Barfoot Farms but flown from Peru. If they cant supply British asparagus in peak season, have to assume they cant the rest of the year. Disappointed. Would not buy again.
poor asparagus
Just like the last reviewer I was very disappointed to receive fine asparagus, that isnt British, in prime UK asparagus season. I wouldnt have bought this in a shop.
Very thin, not much flavour, not British
Its the middle of the English asparagus season but these had been flown all the way from Peru. Very thin asparagus and not much flavour. I wish Id bought some from the supermarket or market as these were disappointing and expensive. Other shops have wonderful asparagus at the moment, but these were wrong on so many levels.
Would be 5 star if organic
Tasty and in good condition. We enjoyed.
